Chutes & Other Things

“Like I was saying, a new game. Let me go ahead and get that summoned." With a flick of my wrist and a flash of light, a ten-story building materializes before us.

One side of the building is entirely open, revealing ten rooms on each floor, connected by a series of secret passages leading up and several steep slides leading back down. Spirits waiting around rush in, instantly beginning to explore the structure without any particular order. Billie laughs beside me, her eyes sparkling with delight as she watches everyone having fun.

It's like a life-size Chutes and Ladders game, but in a funhouse style. Each room is a different theme, some whimsical, some a bit spooky, but all in good fun. I watch as the spirits climb up ladders, only to find themselves sliding back down with whoops and hollers. It's chaotic, but in the best possible way.

I turn to Billie, a playful spark in my eyes. "You ready? It’s our turn," I ask, extending my hand towards her.

She hesitates for just a moment, then her hand slips into mine, her touch light.

We step into the building, and the game begins. The first ladder we come across is dauntingly tall, stretching up towards the higher floors. I start to climb, and Billie follows close behind. I see her grip tightening as we go.

"You're doing great," I encourage her. I’m not sure she needs it.

At the top, we find ourselves on an unexpected platform. It’s a maze of corridors and doors awaiting us. "Left or right?" I ask, looking at her for a decision.

Billie bites her lip, contemplating. "Let's go left, and three lefts make a right. It feels lucky," she says. I shrug and go with it.

We take off into the maze, her steps in sync with mine. Every now and then, our hands brush, sending a jolt of electricity through me. We reach a slide, and I can see the excitement in Billie's eyes.

"Want me to go first?" I ask.

She looks at the slide, then back at me, a playful challenge in her eyes. "Only if you promise to catch me at the bottom," she replies, her voice teasing.

I nod, "Deal."

I take the lead, sliding down the steep, winding slide with a rush of adrenaline. The slide twists and turns, a blur of colors and lights flashing by. I land at the bottom with a soft thud on a cushioned mat, laughing and feeling alive. I turn just in time to see Billie coming down the slide, her hair flying behind her like a golden stream.

She lands gracefully, right into my waiting arms. We stumble slightly, laughing as we steady ourselves. "Gotcha," I say, holding her close for a moment longer than necessary. Her laughter is infectious, and I find myself caught up in the joy of the moment.

"Your turn to choose the next path," I say, releasing her gently.
